What is this curriculum all about?
This FISH! For Schools framework focuses on creating an environment of shared ownership using a common language and establishing strong relationships with and among your students and your school. Research shows that classrooms in which students feel strong relationships to the teacher and peers exhibit over 31 percent decline in behavior and discipline issues (Marzano & Marzano, 2003). FISH! For Schools is about collaborating with students to establish a classroom mission statement, determine behaviors that are in-bounds, create a positive environment that promotes learning, and develop personal responsibility. Through mutual respect and shared ownership, educators work with students to create the classroom where everyone wants to enjoy one another and learn.

Is this framework grounded in research?

Research is abundant in the effects of building relationships with students to increase student achievement. The work of leading education researchers such as, Alfie Kohn, Charlotte Danielson, William Glaser, Alfred Bandura, Marzano & Marzano and others is the foundation for FISH! For Schools.

What are the benefits to students?
Through shared ownership, educators work with students to identify what kind of classroom they want to create. Students are given "permission" to participate in the creation of the classroom. Behavioral standards are created collaboratively and students are held accountable for their actions. Research shows that when students have a "voice" and control in what takes place in the classroom, they are more apt to live by the standards and be more motivated to learn. Building a strong classroom community enables students to feel "connected" to this community of learners, therefore more committed to what takes place in the classroom. When students feel connected and are motivated they inherently want to do well. The principles of The FISH! Philosophy give students the framework and a common language to treat others well, practice "being there" and choosing an attitude conducive to learning, and discover the joy of becoming lifelong learners!

How do students respond to FISH! For Schools?
The FISH! Philosophy takes age-old wisdom, things we know work with building relationships, and brings it all together into a dynamic, inviting package for educators and students alike. Students are naturally drawn to FISH! because of the cool and engaging way the concepts are presented and the simple common language used to describe the principles. Students who have learned about FISH! describe having a much greater sense of control over their environment and life. Students feel they are given the "tools" to handle situations and learn that although we can't always decide what comes our way in life, we can choose how we will respond to the situations.

How long does it take?
The Guided Journey, the individualized personal course for each educator, has 10 units. Each unit will take from 20 minutes to an hour to complete, depending on how many people are discussing the topics and how deeply the participants want to delve. The Guided Journey is designed to be completed over time in order to allow ideas to percolate and for genuine self-reflection to occur.

The Expedition Guide, level-specific classroom activities and exercises, has 6-7 units. Some units have multiple lessons. Each lesson takes 20-30 minutes to complete, but the conversations and ideas that are generated continue indefinitely. Doing a lesson a day, the foundational activities will take 2-3 weeks to complete. Some teachers prefer to do a few lessons a week and stretch the activities over a couple of months. Others weave short shots into classroom meetings, advisory periods or homerooms. Each level includes numerous "keeping it going" kinds of activities.

How do teachers respond to FISH! For Schools?
FISH! For Schools encourages shared ownership and relationship building between and among teachers, students and colleagues. Educators describe feeling "transformed" once they bring The FISH! Philosophy into their lives and FISH! For Schools into their classrooms. They feel better equipped to deal with the challenges they face in the classroom as well as in life. In addition, they describe being more open to recognizing and celebrating successes and growth!

What are the benefits to schools?
FISH! For Schools starts with the invitation to each individual teacher to reflect on and determine their beliefs about education, students and their classroom through the Guided Journey. Once an educator accepts the invitation to live FISH!, they are then given the tools to take it into their classroom. As classrooms are transformed and educators work to establish strong classroom cultures, the concepts of The FISH! Philosophy become easy triggers to remind students of their personal responsibilities in the classroom. Transformation of classrooms and educators "mushrooms" out to all branches and aspects of the school community and amazing, actually unpredictable and unbelievable changes take place! The school becomes a true learning community where all students and educators feel supported in their goals, triumphs and challenges!

Can FISH! For Schools be introduced mid-year?
FISH! For Schools can be introduced at any time of the year. The framework is designed to invite student participation in creating a better place to learn and be every single day. FISH! For Schools teaches students life skills that they can take into the world to live a better life. It is also fun and inviting for students and teachers as it encourages a lighthearted, playful way to learn and live through even the most challenging lessons and situations.

Why does every teacher need to own an Expedition Pack?
The discovery realized through the Guided Journey experience is vital, and just as a diary is very private and personal, every teacher who really wants to impact the classroom culture needs to complete his or her own Guided Journey. Additionally there are classroom specific tools and lessons within each Expedition Guide that are important for each class to use in activities and as daily reminders. Finally, there are some copyright and intellectual property legal issues, making it illegal to copy.
